TE WHANGA ORA
The Living Harbour
Ashleigh Cavanagh & Kareena Patel - Group 03
Based on our previous analysis of Te Manawa Porirua's CBD, we identified several key issues and transformed them into a framework that ultimately shaped our current design, Te Whanga Ora.
Te Whanga Ora – The Living Harbour envisions a connected, resilient, and harbour-focused city, built around three central concepts: the Blue-Green Loop Network, Urban Villages, and a Connected Harbour.
At the core of this project lies the Blue-Green Loop Network, a seamless system of ecological corridors and pathways that facilitates movement for both people and nature throughout the city. This network connects the harbour, parks, neighbourhoods, and key destinations, prioritising walking, cycling, and water-sensitive design to cultivate a healthier and more resilient urban environment. Serving as the city's main artery, it links various urban villages, fostering vibrant, walkable communities close to local amenities and the broader city.
These connections ultimately draw residents back to the harbour through the Connected Harbour framework. A network of green pathways, streets, and public spaces re-establishes both physical and visual ties to Te Awarua-o-Porirua, breaking down barriers between the city and the waterfront. By weaving together movement, ecology, and public space, the harbour transforms into both a destination and an integral part of daily life, one that is accessible, lively, and ecologically responsive. Collectively, these three concepts create a living landscape that not only strengthens community bonds and enhances environmental health but also celebrates the harbour as the vibrant heart of the city.
